Frequently asked questions

What is the state of hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a natural state of focused attention and deep relaxation. It is similar to the feeling of becoming fully absorbed in a book, movie, or while driving and realizing you do not remember part of the route because you were so focused. In this state, the conscious mind becomes quieter, allowing greater access to the subconscious mind where many thoughts, beliefs, habits, and emotional patterns are stored.

During hypnosis, you remain aware, relaxed, and in control the entire time. You cannot be made to do anything against your will. Hypnosis simply allows your mind and body to become more receptive to meaningful change, healing, and transformation.

How can hypnotherapy help?

Hypnotherapy helps by working with the subconscious mind, where many of our thoughts, behaviors, emotional patterns, and beliefs are stored. Many of the struggles people face such as anxiety, overwhelm, grief, self-doubt, unwanted habits, or performance blocks are often rooted in subconscious patterns running beneath the surface. This is why willpower alone is not always enough.

Hypnotherapy helps uncover and shift these deeper patterns so meaningful, lasting change can happen from the inside out. Rather than simply managing symptoms, this work helps create healing and transformation at the root. Clients often experience greater calm, confidence, clarity, emotional regulation, and a stronger connection to themselves.

What can I expect to happen in a hypnotherapy session?

Each session is personalized to your unique goals, needs, and experiences. Sessions typically begin with a conversation about what is coming up for you, what you are working through, and what you would like support with. This helps us identify patterns, challenges, and areas of focus. From there, I guide you through a relaxing process that helps quiet the conscious mind and access the subconscious mind in a safe and supportive way.

During hypnosis, you remain aware, relaxed, and in control the entire time. You cannot be made to do anything against your will. Many clients describe hypnosis as feeling deeply relaxed, calm, and focused, similar to the feeling just before falling asleep or becoming fully immersed in a book or movie.

Using hypnotherapy techniques tailored to your goals, we work to uncover and shift the subconscious patterns that may be contributing to anxiety, overwhelm, self-doubt, grief, unwanted habits, or performance challenges. Sessions are designed to help create meaningful change, emotional relief, and lasting transformation.

Will I be in control?

Yes, absolutely. This is probably one of the most common questions I get, and the answer is always yes. You remain aware, in control, and fully capable of speaking, moving, or ending the session at any time. Despite what movies and stage hypnosis may have led you to believe, you will not cluck like a chicken, bark like a dog, or reveal your deepest secrets unless you genuinely want to.

Hypnotherapy is a collaborative process. You cannot be made to do anything against your will or values. Think of hypnosis as a deeply relaxed and focused state where your mind becomes more open to positive change, while you remain fully in control the entire time.

How long will I need to participate in therapy before I feel better?

Every person and every goal is unique, so the timeline can vary. Some clients begin noticing shifts within the first few sessions, while deeper or long-standing patterns may take more time and consistency to create lasting change.

The good news is that hypnotherapy is often considered a shorter-term, goal-oriented approach compared to traditional talk therapy because we work directly with the subconscious patterns at the root. Studies have shown a 93% success rate after just six hypnotherapy sessions, which is one reason many people are drawn to this work.

Many clients begin to feel more calm, clear, and hopeful early in the process, with deeper transformation building over time. Healing is not always linear, but meaningful change is absolutely possible with the right support and consistency.

May I include family members in my hypnotherapy sessions?

In some cases, yes. For young children, I typically begin with a parent joining the initial session. This helps create comfort, build trust, and allows us to discuss goals, concerns, and the best approach for support. Depending on the client’s needs and goals, family involvement may also be appropriate in certain situations.

If you are interested in group hypnotherapy for families, teams, organizations, or private groups, please contact me directly to discuss your needs and scheduling options. I am happy to explore what type of support may be the best fit for you.

Can appointments be in-person or virtual?

Yes! Virtual appointments are just as effective as in-person appointments.

What do I need to bring to my first hypnotherapy session?

For your first appointment, you will need to complete your New Client Intake Form prior to your appointment.

You don’t need to bring anything specific. I recommend bringing an open mind and a willingness to engage in the process. It can also be helpful to come prepared to discuss any topics or concerns that you’d like to address during your session. Additionally, if you have anything that you believe would be beneficial to share with me, feel free to bring them along. The most important thing to bring is yourself, as you are, ready to explore and work towards your goals for healing and growth.

Will my insurance cover Hypnotherapy?

I do not accept insurance as payment. This is what is referred to as a “fee-for-service-practice.” That said, there are some insurance plans that reimburse some portion of the fee for treatment by an out-of-network provider. I suggest that you check with your insurance plan to see if that applies to you.

Receiving reimbursement for therapy costs is at the discretion of your individual healthcare provider plan. Please note, whether you are able to receive reimbursement or not, payment for services with Essential Key Hypnotherapy is required at the time of the visit.

What is your cancellation policy?

Since I reserve the time you’ve set for your appointment, I require a 24-hour cancellation notice. If you do not cancel within 24 hours of the time of your scheduled appointment, you will be responsible for full payment. Insurance companies do not reimburse for canceled appointments. Thank you in advance for respecting this policy.

What forms of payment do you accept?

I accept credit cards, checks, and cash.
FSA/HSA can also be used.

For ease of payment, your credit card on file will be charged automatically following our session.

Checks and cash payments must be received prior to hypnotherapy session appointment.

24-hour notice of cancellation is required to avoid charges.

Good Faith Estimate Notice

You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your mental health care will cost. Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychotherapy services. You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency healthcare services. You can ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service. If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate. For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises.
